The Water Resources Department has released water from Amaravathi Dam for irrigating 47,117 acres of land in Tiruppur and Karur districts.
Agricultural fields in Dharapuram, Karur and Aravakurachi taluks will be benefitted by the water release for 70 days.
Water supply will be maintained over a period of 134 days till January 31, 2026. Up to 6894.72 mcft water will be released – 4233.60 mcft through 10 canals to irrigate 21867 acres in Tiruppur and Karur districts, and 2661.12 mcft through Amaravathy main canal to irrigate 25,250 acres.
Traversing to a length of 63.2 km, the main canal, with a carrying capacity of 440 cusecs, has an ayacut of 25,250 acres.
Ministers M.P. Saminathan and Kayalvizhi Selvaraj opened the shutters of the dam on Friday in the presence of Pollachi Lok Sabha MP K. Eswarasamy.
Farmers said they were hopeful about comfortable water position till January 2026, for the second consecutive year, factoring in the accrual during the Northeast monsoon months.
Last year, too, abundant rainfall was helpful for the farmers cultivating sugarcane, paddy, coconut, maize, groundnut and other dry crops in the command area.
On Saturday, water level in Amaravathi Dam was 88.59 feet out of the maximum capacity of 90 feet. The storage was 3,919 mcft out of maximum of 4,047. The inflow was 357 cusecs and outflow 275 cusecs. On the same day last year, the water level was 89.5 feet and storage 4,003 mcft.
