The Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association has urged the district administration to take immediate action to prevent the dumping of garbage into the Lower Bhavani Project Canal.

In an email sent to the District Collector, association district secretary T. Subbu pointed out that the canal irrigates 2.07 lakh acres of farmland across Erode, Tiruppur, and Karur districts, serving as a lifeline for thousands of farmers. However, he alleged that dumping of garbage into the canal has become frequent in recent times, posing serious risks to agriculture and public health.

The email highlighted a recent incident at Kurumandur village in Nambiyur taluk, where officials of the Water Resources Department caught a vehicle belonging to the Kurumandur Panchayat reportedly dumping waste directly into the main canal at mile 25/1.

Farmers warned that such activities would pollute drinking and irrigation water, choke sluices, bridges, and regulators, and increase the risk of canal breaches. Solid waste carried along with the water would also damage fertile lands and affect the health of farmers working in the fields.

“The LBP canal is our lifeline, and farmers will never accept its destruction,” the email stated, urging the Collector to take strict action against those responsible and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
